Anti-Apartheid Movement

In my third year, I undertook a live, self-initiated student project to raise awareness of the inequalities of the South African apartheid system. Apartheid was used to deny rights to the non-white population, mainly black people who lived in South Africa, including crucially, the right to vote in government elections.

Only when you completely understand the problem and decide precisely the single most important thing that you wish to communicate to your audience, in this case whites have rights, blacks don’t, will the solution reveal itself to you. And in my experience… often when least expected.

This project represented a seminal moment for me, in that it helped form my approach to graphic design and provided a clear basis for my way of working and teaching.

Complex problem + thorough understanding = simple solution.
